Reflections: My Swing

The Swing

In the courtyard
Of my grandmother's house
I remember the day
Grandpa put up
The Swing
Just for me

I remember the way
He'd stand behind me
When my feet
Didn't quite touch the ground
Help me swing higher
Urging me to reach for the stars
And when I got there,
Share with him whether or not
They made any sound!

My Swing sprinkled
Some stars right into my eyes
Pretty soon their magic pixie dust
Worked its wonders
Painting my whole world
In a beautiful glow

Transforming into my getaway
My Swing and I visited
The magical wonderlands
Of a little girl's imagination
Giving birth to
A new story each day

Through those shimmering eyes
We'd see wondrous things unfold
And tell Grandpa
Stories right back
Of baby birds that kept house
While Mommy fetched them food
Of the corner lilies' games
To bloom faster than each other
Of ants marching along in a single file
Smuggling loads of sugar from Grandma's pantry
Of the breeze creating waves in the fields
Of interesting characters amidst the clouds
Playing Hide and seek
My Swing was a little shy
Always content to let me shine
Though I often received silent swaying reminders
Of our adventures together

Effortlessly, my Swing
Carried me higher each time
The swoosh coming downward
Breeze billowing my hair
Turning round and round infinitely
Then letting go
For the ropes to unravel
At dizzying speeds
My Swing loving the games
We played together each day

My Swing became my abode
Drew me to it
No matter what the hour
I'd skip along to perch on it
First thing upon waking up
And often when calls for lunch or dinner
Fell upon the deaf ears on my Swing
Grandma came out softly
Feeding me with a wordless smile
To help me escape
Grandpa's rules of eating at the table
My Swing, my silent partner in crime!

And when the whole house
Had retired in the cool comfort
Of an afternoon nap
I'd sneak away yet again
To give company to my lonesome Swing
Braving the scorching summer heat
My favorite books in hand
The promise of new friends
For my Swing

The day
Grandpa didn't return
From the hospital
My Swing comforted me
Cradling me,
Holding me close
As I struggled to understand
Where he'd disappeared
And what Mom meant by
"God needed him more"

When the house
Was filled with people
My Swing bid a silent adieu
I remember the pain
Of a forced
Unwelcome parting
From Grandpa
And my Swing
The rolling motion
Of the train ride back home
Brought memories
Of my Swing flooding back
And I wondered
Would we ever meet again?

The next summer
Grandma welcomed us back
With a sad, wan smile
Suddenly she seemed an old woman
I had never known before

Slowly I walked
Through the dim
Never-ending corridor
And seemed to hear
A faint rustle from afar
A movement in the courtyard
Caught my eye

Curious, I ran on ahead
And was greeted
By a welcome dance
A long-awaited embrace
A familiar resting place

That gift from Grandma
Was the most precious thing
Finally,
I was reunited
With my Beloved Swing

Reflections: The Birth of a Poem

The Birth of a Poem

Always wondered
How do people write poetry?
Thread their thoughts into words
So easily, so beautifully

And now
Poems seem to spring up
Of their own volition
From the corners of this mind
I'm not sure how
A new song breathes new life
Each day

Finding a long-lost friend
Meeting yourself once again
When the cobwebs of the mind
Get cleared away for certain
This new mirror
Shows me a glimpse of myself

Is this how poems take birth?
Do songs seek clear mirrors?
Before revealing themselves,
They make sure I've met myself
